Euthymus article

edit

helpme I cannot find the valid Greek special character (Edit → Menu → Special characters) and I use (Εύθυμος) in article Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology/Euthymus (Source: the original article of Euthymus is here). Where is the full table of these Greek special characters? --Francois-Pier (talk) 13:26, 20 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

I usually look them up at unicode sites, eg. http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/block/greek_and_coptic/images.htm, click the link and utilise the html entity code. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:38, 20 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ghazi

edit

help me Please check this

<span title="Mohammedans is the correct">Mahommedans</span>

I use it in the article 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica/Ghazi. --Francois-Pier (talk) 05:37, 12 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

We use a template to pretty much do the same thing...
Mahommedans results in Mahommedans
...with the same type of mouseover pop-up note. -- George Orwell III (talk) 07:47, 12 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Pagination and Transclusion

edit

Thank you for this contribution Gruter, Jan (25 September 2014) and others like it. Instead of hiding the page numbers in an editorial comment please consider using Style Manual: Pagination, or better still use Transclusion. -- PBS (talk) 06:10, 23 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Proofing in EB1911 vol. 24

edit

Bonjour Francois-Pier, thanks for your recent proofing e.g. Page:EB1911 - Volume 22.djvu/833 and Page:EB1911 - Volume 22.djvu/834, I have made further typo fixes on these pages (I have been searching EB1911 for common scan errors e.g. "]ersey" for "Jersey" and found one on djvu.834. I also found a further nine typo errors on that page (plus other issues), please only mark a page as proofed if you have proofed all of it (there were six errors in the first paragraph alone). Another obvious error was "dorninions" for "dominions" — the error shows with a red underline when editing in the browser, so it does stand out.

I also used the {Polytonic} template for Greek text (which correctly renders Greek as printed) and added transliteration (which is used extensively in EB1911). A useful website for the transliteration is http://transliterate.com/ The consensus for B.C. is smaller text not small-caps, so use B.C.

Another useful source for checking text are the high-resolution scans at archive.org e.g. https://archive.org/stream/encyclopaediabri22chisrich#page/816/mode/1up where you can zoom in.

For fine print across pages use and as I have used on those pages (which maintains the fine print without a line break when transcluded). If you have any questions, just ask. Regards, DivermanAU (talk) 20:09, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Bonjour @DivermanAU: When I started contributing I had not understood the use of Proofing, because of Validating, sorry for that typo errors. From the above, I don't use the templates Polytonic and EB1911 fine print, because I did not consider them necessary.

In addition, I have completed the ancient Greek texts in Index:Hesiod, The Homeric Hymns, and Homerica.djvu without polytonic (I can add it), but I don't know how to display these texts on opposite pages. Can you help me? Regards, Francois-Pier (talk) 21:02, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Bonjour again, that's OK about proofing. Regarding "Hesiod" I can try to help, but I'm not quite sure what you mean by "display these texts on opposite pages". Each page scan is just one page. Can you explain in more detail? DivermanAU (talk) 21:53, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@DivermanAU: I try this, but is not ok:

valign="top" width="40%"| <pages index="Hesiod, The Homeric Hymns, and Homerica.djvu" from=520 to=530 step=2 />
valign="top"| <pages index="Hesiod, The Homeric Hymns, and Homerica.djvu" current="The Epigrams of Homer" prev="Hymn XXXIII (To the Dioscuri)" next="The War of the Titans" from=521 to=531 step=2 author="Homer" header=1 />

Francois-Pier (talk) 22:22, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm - the display is close to being good, but the header is showing. I did try adding header="" to the second <pages.. command to try and stop the header appearing but that didn't work. DivermanAU (talk) 23:38, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@DivermanAU:
What need to add only the header on the top of any page? Francois-Pier (talk) 23:56, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Is there any template to display the header, without any page? Francois-Pier (talk) 00:07, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Not sure about the header - but I think every page should have one. But - how about this? I've added a header template to the top spanning both columns.
DivermanAU (talk) 00:21, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@DivermanAU: It's OK, but missing the "New Haven: Harvard University Press, pages 467-477"
Francois-Pier (talk) 00:46, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
That last one looks good. Nice work! (I just made a small change to it, used an ndash, not hyphen, for the page range 467–477. ndash is the first symbol in the "Insert" and "Wiki markup" menus when editing. Also, EB1911 uses ndash for year ranges. See https://www.thepunctuationguide.com/en-dash.html ) DivermanAU (talk) 11:32, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@DivermanAU: Nice work!?, but my contribution reversed by an administrator. --Francois-Pier (talk) 23:07, 5 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Greek transcriptions do not belong here

edit

Hi. Thanks for the contributions, however they are not for here, they belong at Greek Wikisource. Language wikis hold the relevant language. I suggest setting up the same book at elWS as an Index: and the Page: namespace components can be moved over, and transcluded there. — billinghurst sDrewth 22:14, 5 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for Weighing Machines

edit

It seems that you've done major work on the formulae and images in Page Space (Page:EB1911 - Volume 28.djvu/486 et seq). Great work! If you think it's ready, can you check off the list at Wikisource talk:WikiProject 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica#Half a dozen left, and also create 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica/Weighing Machines? I can do the latter if you wish. Thanks again. DavidBrooks (talk) 15:21, 5 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

@DavidBrooks: [Not ready]. Can you recover the missing text of the problematic Page:EB1911 - Volume 28.djvu/486 ? --Francois-Pier (talk) 17:24, 5 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

You mean the garbled text in the middle? Try archive.org. DavidBrooks (talk) 20:41, 5 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

The Biographical Dictionary of America

edit

I see that you have been working on this; thank you! In the future, please use the specialized header template I designed for this work: BDA. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 00:24, 6 November 2020 (UTC).Reply

@TE(æ)A,ea. (talkcontribs): Thanks for your contribution. A discussion opened for the template. --Francois-Pier (talk) 08:52, 6 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
The discussion, as it was (not), has concluded, I presume; as such, please use the template, or bring the discussion to a more noticeable general forum. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 00:49, 16 November 2020 (UTC).Reply
Hello again @TE(æ)A,ea. (talkcontribs), a discussion already existed, please do not reply here, otherwise, you can bring the discussion to the forum you wish. Thank you. --Francois-Pier (talk) 01:39, 16 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Samuel Davies Alexander

edit

help me The header of Author:Samuel Davies Alexander is not connected with wikidata:Q42156315. --Francois-Pier (talk) 12:25, 19 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Seems like this has been resolved? Well done! :-) Inductiveloadtalk/contribs 23:30, 19 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your EB1911 contributions

edit

Hi Francois-Pier, thanks for the recent edits you've made, your work is appreciated. FYI, I made a minor change to several of the articles you created by adding a sort parameter to the category for Volcano Islands, Wensleydale, Wollin, Yezo, Yezidis, Wends, Wolof. Also, for a few of them e.g. Wolof, I edited the Wikipedia article name (w:Wolof people) as it is not always the same, and Yezo to w:Ezo. Thanks, DivermanAU (talk) 14:10, 4 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

align=center in tables

edit

Hi! Just a quick note: the HTML attribute align=center in tables is deprecated and can cause problems, for example on export, where it's often interpreted as a left aligned table with centred content. It's better to use the CSS style style="margin:auto;" (or the shorthand ma). Inductiveloadtalk/contribs 09:28, 24 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
